Summit of Lookout Mountain

Top of the Ranger Trail

National Trail

Holbert Trail
What? No Camelback Mountain?  That's one of the changes implemented for this year's City of Phoenix epic event which will take place NOVEMBER 4-6, 2011. The "big one" is off the list mainly because of the parking quagmire (hellooo) and safely concerns due to congestion. Papago Park has also been nixed (no loss here).  As you know, registration is required and the event fills up quickly, so visit the City of Phoenix Web site to reserve your spot: http://phoenix.gov/recreation/rec/parks/preserves/specials/summit/index.html

Here are the peaks that will comprise this year’s seven summits:

Start at South Mountain Park’s Activity Complex.
1. Holbert Trail to Dobbins Lookout and back. Drive to and park at Las Lomitas Ramada.
2.
Ranger Trail to National Trail and back. Leave South Mountain Park and drive to Piestewa (Squaw) Peak.  Park at the Hopi Ramada.
3.
Piestewa Summit Trail, up and back.  Back to Hopi Ramada.
4. Cross the entrance road, past Mohave Ramada, and up
Trail 200 to the summit and back.  Drive to Lookout Mountain Park. The easiest way is north on SR-51 to the the Cactus Road exit. Turn left on Cactus and head west to Cave Creek Road. Turn right and head north two stop lights to Sharon Drive, turn left and head west to18th Street. Turn right on 18th and follow to the end of the street to park entrance at 14441 N. 18th St.
5. Hike up to
Lookout Mountain summit and back.  Drive to the North Mountain Visitor Center (NMVC).
6. From NMVC, take Trail 100, the Christiansen Trail, to Trail 101 (formerly Trail 100A).  Trail 101 connects with the road to the top of
North Mountain.  Hike to the summit, then back down the road and to Trail 101, to Trail 100.
7. Reconnect with Trail 100 to Trail 306, to the top of
Shaw Butte, climbing clockwise.  From the top, return on the road, then past the dam and back to NMVC, completing the event there.
